ok, this won't be long because my head is pounding, but i did the coating on some of the beads and took photos, because i said i would. so there. i actually did it. they look amazing. the other thing i realized is that it might be better to heat the resin up and just dip them rather than the paint em with the fluid and roll them in the powder, heat it, roll em, heat it, etc. i think a dip might be better. also, it is easy to cut the beads, so it might work well to make a long bead and cut it into pieces and it is easy to sand the edges, as well. so. more experiments to come. i need to get an extension cord so i can work with them on a table rather than on the carpet int he studio, as you can see, a lot of the beads have fiber in them and not on purpose, and i was covered with all kinds of crap so i had to take another shower in the wee hours last night. pictures? i thought you would never ask... the first ones are made from super old sheet music and a really really old dictionary i scored a while ago for a few bucks that is falling apart.
the second are made of just scrapbook paper
the last ones are a combo of origami paper, handmade papers, scrapbook paper and i mixed in metallic pigment with the resin. a lot of the beads look like they have been glazed and fired in a kiln, or raku, and then there are others that look like pearls, exactly like pearls. amazing. i am going to work on bigger projects with this, the options are endless and it is actually really exciting. i think that these pieces could look so great used to make assemblages, or dolls, or with photos inside of them. lots of ideas. i want to make some really big buttons for closures on some of the handspun art yarn knitted and crocheted pieces, as well as on the wire crochet necklaces, etc. ok. i will shut up about it. very exciting. and thanks for all of the compliments. i got a few more comments and published them, as well as my responses and they disappeared. no clue what happened. but thanks to those of you that commented.
i know i go on about this every so often, but i get so much inspiration for all of the other artists and craftspeople and hobbyists out there in the blogosphere and i don't know where i would be in my arts and crafty life without you. honestly. it keeps me excited and fresh, even better than art school. i get ideas for things that i can apply in a totally different arena, but would never have had the idea at all if it hadn't been for seeing the technique somewhere. you know?
ok, i need to go sort out the mess that is my flickr. let me share this insane and huge spider i saw in my raspberry bushes first...i looked it up and it is a golden orb spider, it has this insane design on its back that kind of looks like a skull, and the bugs it has all wrapped up look to be a wasp and a big bumble bee. that is how big it is. man! it spins this crazy zigzag into its web. can you see it? i guess that is its claim to fame.
we watched this week's deadwood tonight and man was it good. the actors are so amazing. that ian mcshane. i love him so. and who would thought that gerald from simon and simon was such a bastard, huh? oh, and anyone know why trixie bared her breasts and crotch before shooting him? what the hell? i am a bit baffled by that. but i did learn that a derringer is no good for killing people. go figure. cute is not the best feature for a gun. even if it does fit in your garter.
smoochies, y'all. oh, and more bead pics, of course on my flickr.

Hey gorgeous! I love your beads.
Did you know why spiders never stick to their own webs? They only make every second row sticky and they know which ones to stand on. Crazy, eh?
Awesome spider! We get them around our house pretty often. I think my brother-in-law has one tattooed on his back.
I love the beads made from sheet music and dictionary pages! I've really been into browns lately.
kat, if i saw that spider IN my house i would not be happy, although, unlike the little whitish ones that do bite me, these don't mess with people, or so i am told.
thanks for the compliment! i always end up making things that look old even if i don't mean to. i am planning to make some buttons as well.
jadey! you are so smart! that is insane about the spiders! if i were a spider, i would get stuck, for sure. smart little buggers. when i researched to find what spider this was, it seemed like mostly the females were big in most kinds of spiders and mostly only the females spin webs. just like us! the male ones are normally a teeny fraction of the size and often live on the female's web.
those are beautiful!!!!!!!!1
thanks pippi!
I love the paper beads!! I haven't seen any like that before with the resin, I usually see the rolled up magazine ones here at folk art and prison art shows. The prison art here is actually really cool.
I showed Cody the photo of your spider! I'm not a big fan of creepy crawlies but he was an entymology major and I thought he'd like the picture. He says that's a black and yellow Argiope. They used to think the zigzag was a way of fixing broken webs but now they believe it has some special attractive quality. Apparently the zigzags reflect infrared lights and the rest of the web doesn't! Or something like that. Neat!
LH, that is crazy! was i at least correct about the spider's name? and it won't bite me right? it looks like it likes to eat bees and wasps, so that is fine with me.
this is off subject but did you ever watch sifl and ollie on mtv years ago? there was a charactar called cody (it is a puppet show, mostly sock puppets) that was a pothead that had bloodshot eyes and bought a hooker for one of the charactar's birthdays and then he thought she actually was into him and didn't realize that she was a hooker. and the puppet really looked like a ho. i hate that word, but yeah. i will now shut it. so whenever i hear the name it makes me crack up. your man isn't a drugdealing, hooker buying sock puppet is he?
is there any place to see the prison art? i did a paper on the death penalty for a class in college and went to the local state prison and there was a guy that painted black musicians and icons and the paintings were gorgeous. i wish i knew where he was to buy one. just amazing.
lovely beads! a few years ago i made some paper beads with the little one, it was listed in one of his kid craft books, but it was just roll and glue! i later dipped them in polyeurathane but they looked nothing like the super fucking cool ones you've got there! wowsa!
LMAO No I've never seen that show I'll have to tease him about it. He's a nerdy computer programmer guy that's tall with glasses and big dark curly hair and a very sweet disposition. He's not even comfortable going to strip bars so I doubt he'd go anywhere near renting a hooker.
About the prison art: The stuff here is based a lot on religious Hispanic folk art. My favorite stuff are the little bottlecap shrines and the paper folding with paper beads. :) Here's a site with some prison art.
And don't worry! Those spiders only eat flying bugs.
those are some pretty beads!!!
i cani just say you have the best digital camera. all you pics come out beatiful...ecen if they are of some nasty spider! ;) but if i got that close with my camera it would be to fuzzy to see!
carmell, our last one was like that too. you just couldn't focus if it was less than an arm's length away or so. and thanks! i really like how the beads came out, too. more to come, for sure.
LH, i think it is out on dvd now. it is really funny. my friend john works with a cody and i always imagine him as a sock puppet, too. my hubby is not a strip bar dude either.
i will go check out that site asap. i am so excited. i love mexican folk art.
jacey,
thanks! i did a bit of other stuff to this bead, i am going to post a tutorial soon for whoever wants to try em out. you can use really anything, i am eager to make some fiber beads, but i am not sure if the fiber will just sizzle when i but the resin on. we'll see. it is easy but fussy, you know?
A tutorial would be AWESOME!
jess, i am working on a tutorial as we speak! woo!
Funny, I just finished a mystery by Margaret Maron called "Last Lessons of Summer" in which an orb spider is a prominent character. Cool book, cool spider.
Thanks for the bead pictures -- you're amazing!
normanack, small world! thanks so much!
